Henry Iglesias is a dynamic, soulful
singer, a prolific songwriter, he masters the piano, the guitar, the blues
harp, writes and directs films, is a solid actor and was recently voted as one
of the top 20 latino comedians in a nation wide poll. Born in Mexico
and brought up in Los Angeles, Iglesias is the son of Latino television and
radio pioneer Roberto Iglesias and as he always jokes "the illegitimate love
child of Julio" Some have said Henry is Latin Americas answer to Jeff Goldblum.
His music styles are as diverse as his talents. He stays busy working on movie
scores such as the upcoming film "East L.A. Wedding". His debut album
"3 Billion Seconds" featuring his group THE NOW is filled with
original music that has been reviewed as a cross between Dave Matthews and
Billy Joel with a strong Latin influence. But Iglesias is no stranger
to recording. In the eighties, he released his first album in Europe selling
over 2 million copies. The album was produced by Jimmy Miller, producer
of the Rolling Stones and recorded in London at the world famous Olympic
Studios. Shortly after returning from the UK in 1991, "KCAL
9" asked Iglesias to write a song for a video that dramatically captured
the emotions during the Gulf war, he gave them even more than they expected by
delivering a deeply moving anti-war composition titled "A Line in the
Sand". A year later KCAL once again asked him to write another song, this
time the subject was the L.A. riots. He once again amazed everyone by
responding instantly with a powerful and haunting rock melody called "Fire
in the City" Iglesias jokes that for a while the US only knew him as the
official "disaster songwriter", but in the end he says that he prefers the
songs we can all relate to, "the romantic disasters like my song "I Don't
Know You Anymore " from the latest CD". Henry is a bilingual
actor and not surprisingly, the Latino community knows him best as the musical
spokesman for SPRINT or his many whacky character parts he has played for TACO
BELL. But lately he is cast as the romantic lead in an upcoming T.V. pilot
called "Stylin" a latino flavored comedy also starring Henry's comedy mentor,
show business legend Avery Schrieber. His most recent acting job was
an independent movie thriller in which he portrays a murderous gun for hire, an
American film called "OLE". But killing people in films is easy, now
killing them in the comedy clubs, that's hard! Yet in 1992, Henry won first
place in a contest as the "funniest new unemployed comedian" at the
Los Angeles IMPROV, grand prize, two weeks in Las Vegas at the Rivera Hotel!
It's hard to believe but that contest was the FIRST TIME Henry had ever
performed as a stand-up comedian. He is presently music director of a
hit show in Los Angeles called "OPENING NIGHT" a completely improvised
musical. It is currently running indefinitely at the Improv Olympic Theatre in
Hollywood. In 1999 Henry finished writing a screenplay that is said to be a
hilarious and interesting blend of comedy, romance, gunplay and caffiene. The
BUZZ in Hollywood is that it's not only a great script but it's going to
make an incredible film. At the moment Henry is finishing producing
the final mixes of an ambitious CD he co-wrote with artist MUSE titled: "A
Circle of Souls". He is also getting ready to start recording a
ground-breaking hip-hop Latin funk dance project in his first language,
Spanish. Henry's goal this year, is to complete his film,
distribute his albums and as he comically put it " to make it cool for the
average guy and gal to walk into music stores across this country, buy an
IGLESIAS album, and not feel compelled to tell the clerk, it's for my
mother" |
